Lauren Crase - October 2016

Boatarde Hotu Hotu, good afternoon all!

Well last month if you will remember, it seemed that exciting things were happening with my VISA. On the 28th September, after 137 days, 4 trips in and out of the country, 15 trips to the department of labor, 6 to the department of foreigners, and 4 to the department of immigration, the day finally arrived to receive my working VISA! God is so good!

Lessons in Patience

When I first researched the requirements for a work VISA on the Timor Leste immigration website, it seems to be quite a straightforward process. Needless to say, God knew the process would not be so straightforward, and thus provided the perfect people around me to help me on this journey. I want to say a huge thank you to Sandra who stood with me in countless queues; to Pastor Carlos and Mana Rita, to Chris and Grace Adams, Pr Daniel Marcal and to all the countless people praying and encouraging me to remember that God's timing is always perfect. The VISA allows me to live and work in the country for 12 months, at which time I can renew the VISA, which apparently is a fairly easy process.

Lessons in Fellowship

Apart from the exciting news of receiving my VISA, September was full of visitors from Australia. First to arrive was Charlotte Naran from Graceville Presbyterian in Brisbane, who arrived to spend 5 weeks in Timor volunteering at a local clinic. Charlotte and I met last year when I came to speak at her church about the work in Timor Leste. It has been a great time enjoying the sights and sounds of Dili with her this month. On the 19th- 23rd, Rob Duncanson and David Burke also came to Dili for a conference with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church in Timor Leste. Approximately 40 ministers, elders and ministry leaders came for a great week of teaching and encouragement. David Burke taught from Genesis 1-3 and Rob Duncanson spoke on Christian leadership. It was also a great chance for me to reconnect with some members of the Besusu Presbyterian Church whom I had met last year when visiting the congregation. Please pray for each of these leaders who will now bring this teaching back to their own churches across Timor Leste.

Looking forward to October's Lessons

With my VISA out of the way, my primary daily focus is now on language learning. I had originally planned to head out to the district of Same soon after receiving my VISA, however due to issues with Lucinda’s vehicle, my plan is to stay a little longer in Dili to look for a vehicle of my own. After speaking with a few other missionaries here in Dili, I discovered that The Dili Institute of Technology holds a week-long course that teaches the in’s and out’s of the Tetun language for all levels of expertise. My hope is to attend this course sometime in the near future to critique and consolidate my language already learnt; and help add depth to my understanding of the Tetun language.

Prayer needs

  • Give thanks for God’s incredible blessing of receiving my working VISA.
  • Please pray for God’s wisdom and guidance for my time in Dili and His timing for when I should go to the district of Same.
  • Please pray for God to lead me to a good vehicle to purchase for my time here in Timor Leste.
  • Please pray for the opportunity to go to the Tetun language course in the near future, to improve and encourage me with my language learning.
  • Please pray for the work of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Timor Leste and the furthering of the gospel in this new nation.
  • Please pray for colleagues Lucinda and Alina as they continue to have issues with the water pump in Weberek and for the smooth process of repairing their vehicle in Dili.
